Marie Spagnoletti……Number 6!

Marie is currently the longest serving Premier League player to grace the football field at Metro United. Her total number of games playing at the highest level, including her previous premier club put her in the same elite category as some of South Australia’s best female soccer players.

Since 2006 Marie has played a dominant role in the midfield and has been Club Captain on two occasions here Metro. Marie is the most humble achiever always putting her team first and is one of Metro United’s founding members.

Marie grew up playing many school sports and was particularly great at netball. Until the day her cousin Nicole introduced her to soccer back then at ABE. She was encouraged by her father Tony, who back then was one of SA’s well known referees, her two brothers Joseph and Carmine and of course her cousin Nicole, who was undoubtedly the best young defender going around at the time! At a young age Marie displayed certain skills and vision which very few players had back then or even today.

During her soccer career Marie represented state teams, was a valuable member of the SA Sports Institute for soccer and was part of the first national women’s league – which now equates to the W-league. Marie over her years of playing was runner-up five times for ‘most valuable female soccer player award’ in SA. She also more recently has become involved with futsal – managing and coaching.

With all her personal accolades over the years I don’t think Marie has enjoyed anything more then to have finally won a premiership with Metro United WFC!!!.

Here are a few words from some of Marie’s past coaches

Wendy Carter: Marie to me epitomises what football is all about. Passion, commitment and the absolute desire for her team to do well was what always came out in Marie.

Kevin McCormick: The difference between a good player and a great player for me is a player that not only has the technical and tactical ability but also that 100% commitment for the team, without a doubt Marie is one of those players.

Her retirement saddens many people at the club but she will now take on a new venture of coaching and more importantly help develop our juniors for the future.

Like her playing days, Marie has put in just as much thought, effort & research into her coaching, undertaking coaching courses & reading many books to help make training as exciting & enjoyable for her girls as possible while teaching them the basics of the game.

Together with her assistant Dani Dickenson (another retired player) we know that the Under 13’s will be a force to be reckoned with…..especially under the guidance of these two girls!

To the under 13 girls….my suggestion is to listen & take in as much information about the game from Marie & Dani as possible. They come with a lot of years experience & knowledge!

Good Luck to Marie, Dani & the Under 13’s in 2012.

Metro United could not function without the support of its members and what better way to raise some much needed funds with fun & entertaining fundraising events.

Metro United Mega Draw

This year we began with the Metro United Mega Draw, this was 1 in 100 chances to win $1000 by purchasing a ticket for $20. This is a fantastic fundraiser, which saw Lisa Faraonio, a friend of one of the senior players win the $1000 jackpot! Congratulations Lisa, hope you spend the money well. This was a well received fund raiser which we’ll do again next year.

Metro United Disco

To get our underage players involved and having fun off the pitch this year, we held an underage disco for those U13 players & their friends. This was a huge success with DJ Dani on the decks and a special appearance from Fresh FM’s Jacky J’s daughter DJ Sofia. We held a dancing competition and served lots of yummy goodies. I think all that attended had a great night (those seniors that came sure did) and I’m sure we’ll see many more happy dancing faces at next year’s Disco!

Poker Night

Due to great demand we saw the return of the Metro Poker Night. In the past this has been a really fun and enjoyable evening for all. We had some help this year from our friends at Adelaide Villa Soccer Club who ran the event. All that attended received a free drink on arrival, plate of pasta and dessert. Over 70 people attended and again another huge success.

Krispy Kreme’s

This is our stable fundraiser which has been running for the past three years. Something not many clubs do however, we have found the response to be a good one. Whilst the economy is down we still managed to sell over 100 boxes this year and we will be back again next year.

Friday 7 October 2011

A very important night in our calendar of events, presentation night is a great opportunity for all members to mingle outside of the club & soccer pitch. We reward those outstanding players for the year & those important people that help throughout the year that keep the club going. Last year we moved locations to Sunnybrae Function Centre. It’s an awesome venue with great food and great staff. This year it’ll be held on 7th October 2011. More details to come.

FOOTBALL FEDERATION SA INC. (FFSA)
HOT WEATHER POLICY

1. Rationale
1.1 The Football Federation South Australia Inc. (FFSA) and its registered clubs and members have a responsibility to ensure the health and wellbeing of staff, volunteers, players, officials and spectators. In fulfilling this responsibility, all members have a duty to provide and maintain an environment that is safe and without risks to health.
1.2 The FFSA Hot Weather Policy will assist volunteers, players, officials and spectators to undertake necessary action in cases of extreme hot weather. This is to prevent injury, and possible death, from heat illness by recognising and managing potentially dangerous heat situations.
2. Risks Associated with Hot Weather
2.1 The FFSA recognises that the risk of an elevated body temperature from high intensity sport in a hot environment is significant, and can lead to heat illness presented as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms can be worse if fluid replacement during exercise is inadequate which leads to fluid loss and dehydration.
2.3 Sports Medicine Australia characterises heat exhaustion by a high heart rate, dizziness, headache, loss of endurance and skill, nausea, clammy and pale skin, and collapse.
2.4 Heat stroke is similar to heat exhaustion but with a dry skin, confusion, collapse and possible coma. It may arise in a player who is suffering from heat exhaustion and has persisted in exercise. This is a potentially fatal condition and must be treated immediately.
3. Factors Affecting Participants in Hot Weather
3.1 The FFSA recognizes that there are a number of factors that may affect participants during days of extreme heat, including humidity, duration/intensity, timing (between 11am and 3pm) hydration, fitness level, age and gender.
3.2 Women, children and the elderly may suffer more in the heat during exercise. This may be due to a greater percentage of body fat in women, and poorly developed sweating mechanism in children.
4. Training/Competitions in Hot Weather
4.1 Clubs shall check the temperature forecast 2 days prior to every competition, as published by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Information is to be obtained from www.bom.gov.au at 9.00am or from the Advertiser.
