Division 4 Season Review

The Women’s Division 4 Season has come to a conclusion, and for our MUWFC ladies, what occurred during 2019 couldn’t have gone much better.

There were some new faces in the side after making the switch from other clubs, including Anita Papazis who came to the club from former State League club Croydon Kings, along with the likes of Paris Fleming, Shayesta Jafari, Natalia Baldino, Alicia Canales, Jess Mrazek and Amy Armstrong.

The season started well, taking full points from 7 of the first 9 games, with the only loss coming against the eventual Division 4 winners Noarlunga United. That loss turned out to be the MUWFC Division 4 sides only loss of the season. The corresponding match ended in a 1-1 draw, with our ladies being only 1 of two teams to take any points from a very strong Noarlunga team all season.

Our MUWFC ladies finished the Division 4 League season in 2nd position on 37 points from 18 games, with 11 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss, and a goal difference of +23. This means that our ladies have gained promotion to Division 3 for the 2020 season. An enormous achievement for coach Ian Davis and his side.

Nancy Belperio was re-named as Captain, and had a solid season running the midfield. While Erin Hossen joined the leadership team as Vice Captain. The goal scoring was shared around generously in the Division 4 side, with Sabrina Scuteri leading the way with 21 goals and Camila Letelier with 20 goals, while long time MUWFC player Carolyn Wong was outstanding in defence. Rebecca Dickins made the jump from junior football to senior football in 2019 and had a great season between the sticks as well.

26 players played in the MUWFC Division 4 team in 2019, including 6 usual Division 1 players who, when required, showed great club spirit and doubled up some weeks when numbers were low so that the side could have a full quota of players.

Our Division 4 team were the only senior team to not be in the same Cup competition as our other 3 senior teams in 2019, and competed in the Women’s Division 4/5/6/Collegiate Cup. And what a Cup run it was.

The first 2 rounds were a breeze for coach Ian Davis team, with a 17-0 win followed up with a 13-0 win against teams from lower divisions. Then came the tough games.

The Quarter Final saw our ladies beat Bosa who at the time were undefeated and top of Division 5, which was then followed up by beating another undefeated side in the Semi Final, Noarlunga United who went on to take out the Division 4 League title.

The Cup Final saw the side take on Sacred Heart Old Collegians who are always a tough team from the Collegiate League. An extremely hard fought battle saw Sabrina Scuteri score the only goal of the match in the first half, with our ladies being crowned the Division 4/5/6/Collegiate Cup Champions for 2019. A well deserved trophy for this outstanding group of women.

Coach Ian Davis is hopeful of retaining the majority of his squad for the 2020 season, and with some likely new additions to strengthen the squad, the preparation for his side’s assault on Division 3 is well underway.
