Cup Quarter Final Preview: MUWFC vs Adelaide City

Premier & State Cup Quarter Final Preview

This Saturday sees the biggest match in women’s football in 2018 to date. The Women’s Premier & State Cup has reached the Quarter Final stage, and we have a match that will be of a Cup Final standard.

MUWFC have drawn Adelaide City in a match that no one wants to see until the Final, but a match that both teams will be desperate to send the other packing early in the competition without Cup silverware for another season. MUWFC officials have decided to hold the game at men’s NPL club MetroStars home ground of T.K Shutter Reserve and gain Home Ground advantage of a different sort.

With only 14 clubs in the Women’s Premier & State Cup competition, that means it is a very short competition, with only 4 Rounds. Round 1 was 6 matches, with 2 “Bye” games, to bring the number of teams left after the 1st Round to 8.

MUWFC were lucky enough in the 1st Round to be the very last team drawn out, meaning that we recieved a “Bye” and a free run to the Quarter Final without having to play a match. That week off was back at the start of May. A week off that came at the right time for a number of players to rest some sore bodies.

Adelaide City on the other hand, did have to play in the 1st Round, although they were lucky enough to have a very favourable draw, managing to draw the 2nd to bottom, and new State League club, Adelaide Jaguars. That match resulted in an unprecedented 23-0 win to City, with Dylan Holmes scoring 7, Daniela Di Bartolo and Tiarn Powell netting 4 each, Matilda Mcnamara with 3, while Jess Goldfinch and Nanako Sasaki both scored 2 of their own and an unfortunate own goal to top it off.

Although City have had a big win in the 1st Round of the Cup, MUWFC will be confident of being able to get over the top of arch rivals City, with the WNPL matches between the sides locked at 1 game each this season. Both games ended in 4-2 scorelines, with City getting the win way back in Round 2, while MUWFC returned the favour just 5 weeks ago in Round 9.

Adelaide City will be forced to recover quickly after having to play a League catch up game against the FFSA NTC squad on Wednesday night, a game in which City won 5-0, meaning that come Saturday, Adelaide City players will have played twice in 4 days, while MUWFC players have had an 8 day break since their last game.

This is arguably the match up of the whole Women’s Cup competition, and with no men’s NPL games on Saturday due to the FFA Cup SA Qualifying Final being held on Monday, a large crowd is expected at T.K Shutter Reserve to see what is sure to be a great afternoon of football. You don’t want to miss it!
