Round 15 Preview: MUWFC vs. Cumberland United

Round 15 Preview – MUWFC vs Cumberland United

As the cold and wet wintery weather really sets in, we see ourselves already in Round 15 and heading into the final third of the regular season. This week we face a struggling Cumberland in a match that, with a win, will see us officially clinch a Finals berth.

Last week was a huge day for the club, playing on Saturday in an historic NPL Double Header alongside MetroStars at TK Shutter Reserve against West Adelaide in a match that was live streamed via YouTube and the FFSA Facebook page. That game was played in some of the worst conditions that players want to play in. Freezing cold, wet and a wind that was going straight down the pitch from goal to goal, meaning that you had to play completely differently from half to half to allow for the wind. The ever dangerous Chrissy Panagaris bagged another 2 goals to take her tally to 20 goals from 14 starts this season, 9 goals ahead of anyone else in the WNPL. Those 2 goals from Panagaris led us to a massive 2-1 win, putting a huge 8 point gap between us in 1st (35pts) to West Adelaide in 3rd (27pts). Club captain Ebony Kyriacou was named by commentators as the Player of the Match, with Panagaris and Ness Reed also having great games.

This week though, we return to the familiar artificial surface of The Parks and will be up against the always frustrating defence of Cumberland. Although Cumberland may be sitting 7th and only on 6 points, our girls would do well not to underestimate them. Cumberland are well known for sitting back and “parking the bus”, then looking to hit on the counter attack and try and catch defences out, so the likes of Ebony Kyriacou and co in defence will need to be on the ball and ready to thwart any attacks that come their way.

With Adelaide City (2nd on 34 points) and West Adelaide (3rd on 27 points) facing off on Sunday, with the right results, MUWFC could really put the foot down and gain a strong hold on that top position as we head into the final stretch of the regular season.
