Under 17 Girls Season Review

The Under 17 Girls season has come to an end, and what a season it has been for our MUWFC girls, claiming 2 trophies and creating club history.

There were some new faces to Mary Mavra’s MUWFC Under 17 side in 2019, with Kiara Librandi sliding effortlessly into left back and Elisa Karas in goal.

Our MUWFC Under 17 Girls took out the Under 17 Girls competition, with 17 wins, 3 draws and just the solitary loss, to claim the League title by 3 points. The girls scored 91 goals throughout the 21 League games, with Michaela Hadaj leading the way with 30 goals, to finish with a massive goal difference of +70.

The only team that our girls failed to defeat was the 2nd placed Cumberland United, with 2 draws and a loss, only coming with a number of players out injured for that game.

Our MUWFC Under 17 Girls also created history by becoming the first Junior side in MUWFC history to win the Cup competition.

Alongside the League players, senior players Sophie McGrath and Ereni Vithoulkas also played in the Under 17 Cup competition as they were both still age eligible, as well as helping out in the League when injuries struck Kiara Librandi and Carla Madonna.

Our MUWFC side received a “Bye” through Round 1 of the Cup, followed by big wins against Modbury Vista and Cove Marion in the Round of 16 and Quarter Final respectively.

Goalkeeper Elisa Karas missed the Semi Final due to concussion after a training mishap with Bonnie Dodds filling in for Karas in goal.

The match started extremely well with Shaylee Hossen scoring just 2 minutes in. However on the 20 minute mark, shockwaves were sent through the side with Carla Madonna sustaining a season ending injury. That moment could have derailed the team, however every girl lifted and our girls ran away with the match to win 6-0.

Cup Final day came along and it was a day of absolutely horrible conditions. Elisa Karas came back into the side after missing 4 weeks with concussion, however Jordyn Walsh missed the Final when she sustained an injury at training, with Carmela Scalzi stepping up from the Under 15 side.

Kiara Librandi was forced off with an early injury, with Shaylee Hossen moving to left back, and she was absolutely outstanding. There were few chances on a horrible day, but the breakthrough came via a Ereni Vithoulkas corner. Carmela Scalzi came on during the second half and was outstanding, and is definitely a player to watch for the future. The girls were able to hold on against Fulham United to claim a 1-0 win, and will go down in history as the first MUWFC junior side to win a Cup competition.
